چکیده

Presentation of the conference The 30Annual Conference of Italian Association of Cell Cultures (AICC) was held at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, in Milan, on November 27–28, 2017, with the Scientific Coordination of Claudia Chiodoni and Mario Paolo Colombo, from the same Institute. The conference was opened by Katia Scotlandi, President of the Italian Association of Cell Cultures. The main objective of the conference was to discuss the present knowledge on the role of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, shaped by cells promoting tumor survival that could be reeducated to treat cancer. The meeting was organized in two days with 5 thematic sessions, an opening and a closing lecture, with national and international speakers. The organizers truly thank those who took part in the conference and made the Conference a success.

Long Acting Propranolol and HSP-70 Rich Tumor Lysate Reduce Tumor Growth and Enhance Immune Response against Fibrosarcoma in Balb/c Mice

Background: Noradrenaline (NA), the principal neurotransmitter released from sympathetic nerve terminals, influences T-cell maturation, not only directly in developing T cells, but also indirectly, by acting on the thymic nonlymphoid cells. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the anti-proliferative, anti-migratory, antiangiogenic and cytotoxic properties of propranolol, β-AR blocker,...

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells as Therapeutic Target in Hematological Malignancies

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous population of immature myeloid cells that accumulate during pathological conditions such as cancer and are associated with a poor clinical outcome. MDSC expansion hampers the host anti-tumor immune response by inhibition of T cell proliferation, cytokine secretion, and recruitment of regulatory T cells. In addition, MDSC exert non-immu...

Eradication of solid tumors using histone deacetylase inhibitors combined with immune-stimulating antibodies.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) have been successfully used as monotherapies for the treatment of hematological malignancies; however, the single agent effects of HDACi against solid tumors are less robust. Using preclinical models of lymphoma, we have recently demonstrated that HDACi induce tumor cell-specific apoptosis and that this is essential for the therapeutic effects of these age...

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Can Regulate the Immune Response in the Tumor Microenvironment

The tumor microenvironment is a good target for therapy in solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Indeed, solid tumor cells' growth and expansion can influence neighboring cells' behavior, leading to a modulation of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) activities and remodeling of extracellular matrix components. This leads to an altered microenvironment, where reparative mechanisms, in the pre...

Biology and Treatment of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis

Hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome that occurs at all ages and is characterized by high levels of cytokines, secreted by activated T-lymphocytes and macrophages. All symptoms and laboratory changes can be explained by organ infiltration by these cells and hypercytokinemia. HLH occurs as an inherited form (genetic, primary HLH) with mutations primarily in the...
